That sounds like an excellent book, Helen. It reminds me of the quote that you cure more sin with compassion than condemnation. It's natural to get annoyed and fed up with repeated misbehavior, but catching kids being good and praising them builds their self-esteem. Knowing that they are accepted but that their misbehavior is not helps them to want to change it. They will mature given the guidance and safety to do so. Thank you for promoting this good book!
This is very interesting and certainly something all educators, including parents should be looking more into. Our culture has always been such that if a child is not performing well in school he/she is labelled as 'dunce' and if he is restless, he is called 'bad'. These labels are applied and many times stays with the child for many years, causing even further behavioural problems which now stems from low self-esteem or from seeking attention.
New approaches to conflict management are badly needed in Jamaica, especially for parents teaching their children. This book is a great starting point for discussions between parents and children about understanding conflict. Using the story of Dooney the Donkey and Ramos the Goat, the book explains ideas like “conflict” and “identifying problems,” which are often hard for children to understand. It also highlights the benefits of resolving conflicts without physical confrontation. Children in grade 2 and above can read it on their own, but it is far more effective when discussed with a parent or teacher. The book encourages children to identify their conflicts, keep a journal, and write their own stories. Another reason this book is valuable is that it features Jamaican characters and settings, helping Jamaican children relate to it.
One of the biggest challenges teachers face is dealing with student misbehavior. The value of Pearnel’s book is that it explains disruptive disorders, helping teachers understand the behaviors they encounter. Without this understanding, it becomes nearly impossible to help students effectively.
